Training camp preview Safety

The safety postion has been a thorn in the side of Lions for years. Injuries have a been a main cause. Last season, Delmas, Speivey, Erik Coleman, Vincent Fuller and Chris Harris all missed time due to injury. Recent years saw Dan Bullocks, Gerald Alexander, Ko Simpson, Marquand Manuel, Dwight Smith all shelved during the year.

The question is with John Wendling do you keep four other safeties? Delmas missed the off-season due to injury and Spievey missed time as well. The Lions cut two rookies following mini-camp Sam Proctor and Alonzo Lawrence.

Louis Delmas

WMU grads Mr. C and Delmas

4th year 41 starts  229 tackles 2 picks 4 FR

Delmas when healthy is a player that can be a force in the run game and match up with TE. However, he has missed time the last two seasons. He has not recorded a INT since his rookie year. He is on the last year of his contract. Delmas success rate vs. the run was 40% and led the team with 65% success against the pass. He broke up only 3 passes. He missed 8 tackles in 2011.

Amari Spievey

3rd year 30 games 24 starts 121 tackles 5 picks

A third round pick in 2010 as a corner, he proved he could not cover anyone. He did show he could tackle and was moved to safety. A force in run support but lost in coverage, he really struggled the second half last year. He is probably best suited for a third safety spot and special teams duty. His success rate was 38 % vs. the run 48% vs. the pass.

Erik Coleman

9th year 4 games

Finished the season on IR after an injury to his leg vs. Dallas. A stout player in run support and special teams, he struggled in coverage during the preseason. He received 1st team reps this off-season with the injuries to Spievey and Delmas.

Sean Jones

9th year Free agent

A late signee from the Bucs after mini camp, Jones has been very durable during his career. He is insurance for the injury bug. Rarely have the Lions found a productive safety in free agency (Brian Walker, Corey Harris, Brock Marion, Dwight Smith, Kenoy Kennedy, Kalvin Pearson, CC Brown).

John Wendling

6th year 32 games 55 tackles

An outstanding special teams player especially as a gunner on the punt team. He ranked 4th in the NFL with 17 special teams plays made. He is a terrible safety. With injuries he was forced to start the Bears game and play much of the Raiders game. Keeping him is problem because it kills your depth at safety.

Don Carey

#27 Smith and # 31 Carey

4th year 5 games 11 tackles

Signed off the street last season, Carey played safety at the OTA. He is solid tackler and special teams player but must earn the Lions confidence in coverage. My feeling is he will not make the 53 man roster but play for the Lions sometime during the season. Might get reps at corner with the loss of Berry.

Ricardo Silva

2nd year 4 games 3 tackles 1 playoff tackle Preseason 2 picks 14 tackles

Made the practice squad as a UDFA from Hampton last season. He had a strong preseason which included a pick of Tom Brady. He has size and speed and can play special teams. If he can show coverage ability he could make the team. I think he is destined for the practice squad.
