Detroit Lion WR Calvin Johnson named to 6th Pro Bowl

Despite limited production, CJ was named to his 6th pro bowl. The saying is you get in one year late and stay one year too long. It is very unlikely he would play in the game.

Detroit Lions DE Ziggy Ansah named to first Pro Bowl

Ziggy Ansah was named to his first Pro bowl. The first Lions Defensive End since Robert Porcher in 2001. Zig has a monster year and was a no brainer pick even on a bad team.

Here is a tribute:

Zig has 13.5 sacks this season 2nd in the NFL

Congrats Zig

Just for fun here is my scouting report on Zig January 28, 2013. After the senior bowl

Draft Prospect Ziggy Ansah Detroit Lions breakdown

Took some time to breakdown prospect BY DE Ziggy Ansah. Ansah is a half year starter with limited experience. However, his play at the senior bowl and the films I watched, I rate him as a rare prospect.

Ziggy Ansah
Senior Bowl Practices:

Ansah at the Senior Bowl
South MVP

I saw two practices for the South and he did not impress me. He was handled in the one on ones and did little in the team drills.

In the game he was the best player on the field. He had great pursuit and ability to make impact plays.

The two films I watched were Boise and Utah. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-JxQlaxBHU

He was great in both films. He lined up all over the place, 1 3 5 and 9 technique. The things that stood out include violent arms. He knocked back blockers with hands everytime. This made him able to control blockers and make tackles. He had a knack to block passes at the line. His pursuit was excellent. He made plays against the run and the pass.

I went back and broke down the Notre Dame film. I saw much of the same I saw in his other games. Explosive upper body, the ability to separate from lineman and make tackles. He played mostly inside in this game and was easily the best player on BYU.

Martin Mayhew has a big choice to make at # 5. He had a whole week with Ansah at the Senior Bowl. Ansah is a tough projection because of his limited experience but his ability is rare. I think he needs to be in the conversation at # 5.

Detroit Lions waive OT LaAdrian Waddle. Sign Bear Pascoe and Gabe Ikard

Detroit Lions waive 3 year man LaAdrian Waddle. Waddle started 24 games since being signed as a RFA in 2013. He looked like a solid starter his rookie year but injuries derailed his career. He was awful this season. His poor performance vs. Green Bay sealed his fate. Waddle was claimed by the Patriots this week.

Here is a tribute:

Waddle played 30 games in Detroit.
He started 24.
Good luck

Lions sign TE Bear Pascoe. He replaces Pettigrew as the block TE. He is a 7 year veteran and has played in 82 NFL games.

Bear has played 82 NFL games starting 34.

Lions sign claim OC Gabe Ikard from Cleveland. Ikard is a 2nd year man out of Oklahoma. A 4.o student and will test Swanson at center in the future.

Here is a tribute:

Scenes from the Roar Zone Thanksgiving vs.the Eagles

Third win in a row for Detroit. Third in a row on Thanksgiving.

What I noticed:

Stafford is obviously a lot more comfortable with Jim Bob Cooter than Joe Lombardi. The subtle changes since the bye week have helped tremendously.

A lot more Golden Tate with the ball. A good dose of those screens.

Defense is in getting in good run fits. Front 7 is in sync. Games starting to get home in the pass rush.

Josh Bynes is legit. Improved so much this season.

The young corners are playing well. Especially Slay. Lawson competes and Diggs is tough.

Martin Mayhew and his worst moves as Detroit Lions GM

After an exhaustive analysis of the moves of GM Martin Mayhew, here are his worst moves:

1. Drafting Eric Ebron # 10 in the 2014 Draft over DT Aaron Donald.

This was the final nail in the coffin. Mayhew did not exercise the 5th year option on Nick Fairley and he knew he was not going to re-sign Suh. Si.com called Donald far and way the best DT in the NFL.

2. The Jahvid Best Trade. 2010 draft

Traded back into the first round to nab best. Best was concussed in his last game at Cal. Many teams had taken him off their draft board. He gave up picks that became CB Chris Cook, DE Everson Griffin to division rival Minnesota.

3. Trading up for Mikel LeShoure in the 2011 draft.

I give a little leeway to Mayhew on this one because LeShoure torn his Achilles and lost 2 steps. Lions traded picks that became OG John Moffitt and All-Pro CB Richard Sherman to Seattle.

4. Inability to find quality CB in the draft and free agency.

Ready for this list:

Jahi Word-Daniels, Jack Williams, Marcus McCauley, Prince Miller, Will James, Anthony Henry, Kevin Hobbs, Philip Buchanon, DeMarcus Faggins, Amari Spievey, Dante Wesley, Jon Wade, Nathan Vasher, Paul Pratt, Eric King, Tye Hill, Eric Wright, Brandon McDonald, Anthony Madison, Aaron Berry, Alphonso Smith, Jerome Murphy, Patrick Lee, Jacob Lacey, Drayton Florence, Ron Bartell, Kevin Barnes, Chris Houston, Jonte Green, Chris Greenwood, Cassius Vaughn, Josh Thomas, Mohammad Seisay, Danny Gorrer, Josh Wilson, Rashean Mathis, Quandre Diggs, Nevin Lawson, Dwight Bentley, Alex Carter, Darius Slay.

Played CB for the Lions under Mayhew.

Quality starters: Houston, Slay,Mathis.

Quality slot CB; Wright

5. The guys he signed to play safety next to Louis Delmas:

List # 2
Marvin White, Deangleo Smith, Ko Simpson, Marquand Manuel, John Wendling, Amari Spievey, Randy Phillips, CC Brown, Ricardo Silva, Chris Harris, Vincent Fuller, Erik Coleman, Don Carey, Tyrell Johnson,

Notice Amari Spievey is on both lists.

6. Selecting Nick Fairley over Robert Quinn in the 2011 draft.

Fairley was dropping fast in the draft after questions about his character surfaced. Quinn was coming off a tough year at UNC but blew up the combine, This blog rated Quinn over Fairley.

7. Trading 2 2015 draft picks for Haloti Ngata.

Ngata was washed up and reported out of shape.

8. Selecting Brandon Pettigrew, Derrick Williams and Aaron Brown with the Roy Williams trade.

Trading Roy was genius. Selecting those guys not so much.

9. Bringing in thugs to Detroit.

Fairley, LeShoure, Titus Young, Johnny Culbreath, Aaron Berry, Amari Spievey.

Lost count of the number of arrests.

10. Signing Calvin to a 7 year $113 million contract in 2012

gave us one great year and one good. Now a possession WR. Let go of the wrong guy. Should have kept Suh.

Acquired three picks in the Roy Williams trade. Stafford has developed into a below average QB. Pettigrew has been a major disappointment.
