Detroit Lions advanced stats report card 4-7 Defense

Front 4

Ndamkong Suh

Suh kicks Schaub in the jimmy

Suh has played very well this season. His pass rush has been at a near leite level. 4 sacks 13 QBH from a DT is really good. He has taken a lot of heat for his play but outside of Houston and Fairley everyone else has taken a major step back this year. Not his fault.

Nick Fairley

Masta P and Nick
Has grown into a great player. 4 sacks 8 QBH 19 run stops and hustle plays have cemented that status. He and Suh have kept the Lions in games this season.

Kyle VandenBosch

KVB misses a tackle

Kyle VandenBAD. He ranks as the worst DE in the NFL by pro football focus. Terrible against the run and little threat against the pass. He was shut out by Duane Brown Thursday. 4 sacks 5 QBH 4 penalities 4 missed tackles. He has struggled on contain as well.

Cliff Avril

8 sacks5 QBH 1 ff 16 run stops 4 penalities and 4 missed tackles. He receives negative grades against the run and is a streaky pass rusher. He excels in must pass situations. He had 2 sacks vs. the Texans and did nothing else. His penalty on 3 & 4 in overtime was bad.
Sammie Hill

Mr.C and Sammie chill at Ford Field
Effective player at about 25 snaps a game. More than that he stuggles. He has 7 tackles 3 QBH 5 run stops and 5 good plays. His 4 penalties have hurt the Lions.

Corey Williams

Corey is pretty good when healthy
Effective when healthy. Has missed 3 games. 2 sacks 2 QBH 6 run stops in 198 snaps. A rotational player at this stage with Nick and Suh playing well.

Willie Young

Willie ponders his slow start

Playing better of late after a horrible start. 7 tackles 3 QBH and 7 run stops most in the last two games. His 6 penalties in 247 snaps are bad.

Lawrence Jackson

LoJack watches Foster score
Decent run defender poor pass rusher. 1 sack 4 QBH 6 run stops. A rotational player in the NFL good for about 25 snaps mostly in run downs.

Linebackers

Stephen Tulloch

Tulloch in better times

A step back this season after a really good 2011. 14 missed tackles lead the team. He had 11 in 2011. 37 run stops is second on the team and his coverage has fallen off in 2012.

Justin Durant

Durant misses Vernon Davis
Solid run defender and poor in pass coverage. 38 run stops lead the team. However, has surrendered 32 receptions and 2td in coverage. He has replaced Levy in the nickel and struggled.

DeAndre Levy

Levy #54 chases Andre Johnson
Struggled this season. Even worse than last year. Has proven to be an inside linebacker with his lack of speed. 29 run stops 9 missed tackles and 20/29 on targets in coverage. He must be replaced.

Ashlee Palmer

Palmer here beaten by Zach Miller
Filled in for Levy and played well. Is more of an inside player and struggles in coverage. He ia an asset on speccial teams and goalline situations.

Chris Houston

CH23 picks Matt Schaub
Has played at a pro bowl level this season. The best corner play in Detroit since some early Dre Bly. Solid tackler and in coverage. Surrenders only 55% in coverage and 1 td. 16 run stops is tops in the secondary.

Drayton Florence

Tough player but has struggled. missed 4 tackles vs. the Texans. Costly penalty against the Packers. Probably fits in as a 3 or 4th corner but has to our #2.

Jacob Lacey

Lacey with one of his 27 tackles
Bad. Struggled in coverage. Leads the LIons in TD given up with 3. Also has 7 missed tackles. We know why the Colts gave up on him.

Jonte Green

Mr. C hangs with Jonte in Allen park
Improved player who held his own when pressed into action. Has given up 3 touchdowns but those were early in the season. Has a chance to be a player.

Louis Delmas

Mr. C and Delmas at Ford Field
Effective player when healthy. Rarely healthy. Has finished three games since lst Thanksgiving. The Lions are better when he is active but we cannot count on him.

Erik Coleman

Coleman # 24 chases Andre Johnson
Struggling this season. Poor in coverage and misses a lot of tackles. Likes to peak in the backfield and gets fooled a lot. Leads the safeties with 237 yards given up in coverage. Has missed 7 tackles.

Ricardo Silva

Teams have figured out he cannot cover. Was fooled on back to back plays while replacing Delams on Thursday. You could see the veterans were not happy with his reads. His 6 receptions in coverage have yielded 115 yards. Good special teams player.

Amari Spievey

Spievey with his 4th concussion

Total mystery. Played poorly got benched then came back to play well. Got a brain injury and is done. He is a restricted free agent. We will see.

Bill Bentley

Bill in the preseason
Bad. Struggled in Coverage and tackling. 5 penaltites lead the back 7 in only 177 snaps. Hopefully,  he will improve next season.
