Detroit Lions pre-draft visit prospect breakdown updated 4/22

Lions have brought the following prospects to Allen Park for pre draft visits

Lael Collins LSU OG I love this guy at Left Guard. I would be surprised if he was around at #23. He is a starter right away.

DJ Humphries OT Florida True left tackle prospect but not a slam dunk. If believe he would be a day one starter at left tackle for Detroit and worthy of the #23 pick.

Donovan Smith OT Penn State Left possibility. Hit and miss during his career but had a strong senior bowl. I have a third round grade on him.

Cedric Ogbeuhi OT Texas A&M Left tackle possibility in 2016. Torn ACL late in the season leaves him out for most of 2015. Long arms and a lot of experience. I have a third round grade on him.

Cameron Jefferson OT-OG Arkansas almost 6'5" and 317 lbs. Raw athlete who needs to get stronger. He might be a guard in the NFL.I have a free agent grade.

Jamon Brown OG Louisville Strong candidate to play guard in the NFL . I think he could start in 2016. Late 3rd round grade.

Antonie Everett OG McNeese State Raw prospect who lacks the numbers to play in the NFL. He hurt himself during the draft process and will not ready until training camp. Rookie tryout camp.

Todd Gurley RB Georgia BEst player in college football last season. Explosive and big. Best running back prospect since Adrian Peterson. Torn ACL keeps him out of the the top 10. I would not take him in the 1st round.

Tevin Coleman RB Indiana Complete back who can carry the load. Ran a 4.4 at his pro day and maybe elevated him to the early 2nd. The Lions have a man crush on this guy.

Jeremy Langford RB MSU good back. A solid rotational guy. He has some speed, he can run inside. 4th round

Tyler Lockett Slot Kansas State Quick, elusive slot receiver. Great feel for the option route and a threat with the ball in his hand, This is a guy the Lions need third round.

JJ Nelson Slot UAB Small but fast 4.28 40. Good return man. Raw receiver. 5th round.

Tony Lippett WR/CB MSU good player. Where does he play? At WR he is possible 3rd guy. At corner is he is project 5th round.

Tyrell Williams WR Western Oregon Size (6035 204) and speed (4.4) 39.5 VJ. Small school with potential 5th round.

Kaelin Clay WR Utah Small return man. ran 4.46 at his pro day. Lacks the big time speed to be an impact return man. 7th round.

Marcus Murphy RB-Slot Missouri small but elusive return guy. Lacks size and speed. Free agent

DeVonte Parker WR Louisville Strong with speed. Can catch it traffic. Top 15 pick

Bresaud Perriman WR CFU Fast riser with sub 4.3 speed. NFL size Top 15 pick.

Tre McBride WR William & Mary. Food size and speed to be a # 3 receiver and progress to a # 2. Third round pick.

Devin Funchess WR/TE Michigan Tweener who could be a weapon is he used in match up situations. 2nd round pick.

Carl Davis DT Iowa Tough Evaluation because he was two gap in college. Goes to the senior bowl and is great. 2nd round pick

Marcus Hardison DT ASU 6'3' 307 sub 5 40. Could be a rotational player in the 4-3 4th round pick.

Xavier Cooper DT Washington State Good athlete who moved around the line for the Cougars. He dominated Oregon. 2nd round pick.

Mario Edwards DE FSU Base end in the 4-3. Run stopper not a pass rusher. Someone will take him early but I think he is a third round pick.

Eddie Goldman DT FSU good size and movement. Gets blocked and stays blocked. Rotational player next year. 2nd round pick.

Angelo Blackson DT Auburn Size and speed but lacks strength. He is 6th-7th round pick.

Jordan Phillips DT Oklahoma Big guy who can move. Lacks production and has a bad back. True 3-4 NG. I would not draft him.

Danny Shelton DT Washington Huge man. Can play inside at 1 or NT. Not a great scheme fit for Detroit but a great talent who be a value at # 23.

Marcus Rush DE MSU Good player, A tweener. I think he is a 4-3 end. 7th round pick.

Stevie Nelson CB Oregon State Small, tough slot guy. A better player than Dwight Bentley 3rd round pick.

Alex Carter CB Stanford Long, zone corner. Does not make a lot plays on the ball but can support the run. 5th round pick.

PJ Williams CB FSU Tough man corner Who has 1st round talent but a DUI during the process takes him off my board.

Eric Rowe S Utah Good football player. A tweener who I believe is safety. Some will see him as a corner but he lacks the ability to turn and play the ball. 2nd round.

Chris Dunkley CB South Florida  5114 183 Small and weak. Decent speed. Free agent

Brian Blechen S Utah 6022 226 4.77 40. Size but he might have to bulk up and play OLB. Could be a special teams stand out. Free agent

Demarious Randall S ASU Interesting safety prospect. Has great range and ball skills. I can see him taken in the 2nd round.

Anthony Harris S Virginia Tough evaluation because an injury has held him out of the pre draft process. 5th round pick.

Kyle Brindza K Notre Dame Pro kicker but we do not need one. Free agent

Detroit Lions trade DE George Johnson to Tampa

Lions trade RFA George Johnson to Tampa for a 5th round pick. The lions will trade their 7th round pick as well. Johnson's offer sheet was disputed by Detroit and the teams decided to settle it themselves. Johnson was picked up off the street and played well for Detroit.

Johnson had 6 sacks and 29 tackles in Games for Detroit in 2014

Detroit Lions draft preview Running Backs 2015

Deep running back class with two stud players at the top. Lions could use a back with some swagger and speed in the middle rounds.

Ameer Abdullah Nebraska small but tough one cut runner. Would be a good 10 touch guy for the Lions but he is a fumbler. I would be tempted if he was there in the 3rd round.

Jay Ajayi Boise State Reminds me of Joquie. Bull to bring down. good in the red zone. I would pass on him.

Buck Allen USC NFL size and speed. Need strength but will be a role player in the NFL. Middle round guy.

Cameron Artis-Payne Auburn Enough strength and speed to be a rotational player. third day pick. 6-7 round.

David Cobb Minnesota Tough runner. Can pass block. Durable. Not enough speed.

Tevin Coleman Indiana Good back. Tough, enough speed and make ya miss. Tempting in the third round.

Mike Davis South Carolina Productive back enough speed and receiving ability to be a # 2 back. Late round pick.

Melvin Gordon Wisconsin Stud. Can run you over, away from you and make you miss. Legit # 1 back. 1st round.

Todd Gurley Georgia The best player in college in football. Reminds of the 1980s with all those great runners. ACL injury means the Lions should pass on him.

David Johnson Northern Iowa I Like this guy. 6' 224 4.5 speed. Production. Looked good at senior bowl. 4th round

Duke Johnson Miami Home run hitter. Outside speed. Not a great inside runner. A bit small. I would take him in the 3rd.

Jeremy Langford MSU underrated. Good football player with more speed than given credit for. Not an all-pro but a steady back for 5 years. 4th round.

Terence Magee LSU Southern banger. Low center of gravity but has enough speed. 3rd day pick.

Karlos Williams FSU tough runner, good receiver. Special teams player third day pick.

TJ Yeldon Alabama Tough guy. Good vision. I think he be a better pro than college player. Good size and speed. third round.

Detroit Lions draft preview Wide Receiver

Deep draft once again at WR. You have big guys for the outside and quick guys for the slot. The Lions need one of each.

Nelson Agholor USC Fast riser, Good speed and open field moves. Can play both inside and out. I think he makes an impact at #3 wr and rises to a good # 2 in the neat future. Pick # 25-40

Kenny Bell Nebraska Productive receiver. Timed better at the combine than he plays. Mid round guy who could make it in the NFL as a rotational guy. Needs to get stronger.

Sammie Coates Auburn Home run hitter. Great straight line speed. Poor route runner and average hands. Has value because he can run but far from polished. Late 2.

Amari Cooper Alabama Smooth, Marvin Harrison type. Productive get open. # 1 receiver #3 overall.

Chris Conley Georgia Freak athlete. Blew up the combine. Not productive in college but the QB play was uneven. This guy has potential but is not a proven talent. I like him at the top of third but might be over drafted.

Jamison Crowder Duke Small, quick slot guy. Has return ability. Not a burner but could be productive inside. 4th round pick.

Geremy Davis UCONN Size and speed. 216 lbs and sub 4.5 40. Looks like a mid round receiver with upside.

Philip Dorsett Miami Love this guy, speed to take the top off. We need a guy like this 2nd round.

Devin Funchess Michigan Tweener who ran much better at his pro day. Big body who can catch in traffic. I see him as move guy rather than a true outside threat. 2nd round.

Antawn Goodley Baylor small but strong 4.44 speed. I see him as a tough inside slot guy who will be productive as a pro. 4th round

Dorian Beckham-Green Missouri Outside receiver with size and speed. Major character issue but has moved past them. A boom and bust guy.

Rashard Greene FSU Slight, productive receiver. Good hands, makes plays. Could develop into Solid # 3 4th round.

Justin Hardy ECU Ultra productive inside guy. Quicker than fast but understands space and concepts. Will play in the league 5th round.

Tony Lippett MSU Athlete. He can play both WR and CB but is he a starter? 4th round.

Tyler Lockett KSU Crazy quick, slot  and return guy. Could catch a lot of balls in his career. Gets open. 3rd round.

Vince Mayle WSU underrated athlete. Can play outside but is raw. Big body could develop into # 2. 5th round

Tre McBride William & Mary Outside guy with NFL side and speed. Showed ability to be a solid # 2. 3rd round.

Ty Montgomery. Slight, play maker with return ability, Has struggled with injury. Strong with ball in his hands. 4th round.

JJ Nelson UAB Small burner. Good return man but raw at receiver. Speed might get him over drafted 5th round.

DeVante Parker Louisville. Strong receiver. Catches the ball in the traffic. Has potential to be a # 1 receiver top 15 pick.

Breshad Perriman UCF Speed and production., Fast riser following pro day. Top 25 pick.

Devin Smith Ohio State Great deep ball receiver. Good speed. Adjusts to the deep ball better than most. top 50 pick.

Jalen Strong ASU Big tough outside receiver. Potiential to be a # 1 receiver. Round 1

Jordan Taylor Rice Sleeper. I like this guy. Has great speed and size. More polish than you would think. 4th round

Darren Waller Ga Tech Huge 6'6" receiver. Very raw athlete. Project 6th round.

Kevin White WVU Stud. Size, Speed. Hands My #4 overall player.

Detroit Lions Draft Preview Corners 2015

There are corners who can play in the league in this draft. The key for the lions is finding a guy who can play in the slot and another who can replace Mathis outside.

Alex Carter Stanford CB AN outside guy with size and a 40" Vert. Did not stand out on tape. Did not make plays and did not love his ball skills. Carter would be a mid round pick and could develop in a two years.

DC Celiscar WMU CB Stood out in early season match ups with the big ten. He can be moved to safety. He has size at about 5'11" but lacks speed. A free agent

Jalen Collins LSU CB outside guy with size and speed. Very raw. Could have used another year in school. I could see a team fall in love with him and take him in the first round. The Lions should not be that team.

Justin Cox Mississippi State Compares to Darius Slay. Size and speed. I could see him go in the 4th round.

Ronald Darby FSU This guy can be an a impact starter at slot corner. He has enough size to play outside but I feel his best ball will be inside. I think the Lions could take him at #23.

Ifo Ekpre-Olomu Oregon Coming off an ACL in the winter. He has the ability to play slot corner in the NFL. He would be a 1st round guy if not for the injury. I can see a team take him in the 2nd and redshirt him.

Randall Evans Kansas Stater Size and speed guy. Needs strength. Mid round guy who could develop and play special teams.

Charles Gaines Louisville Shorter, quicker guy built for the slot corner. I could see him as a 3rd rounder.

Senquez Golden Ole Miss Short but quick. Great ball skills. This guy could be an impact player at slot corner. He is a little small to play outside diminishing his value. Third round.

Ladarius Gunter Miami Outside corner. Size but lacks speed. Reminds me of Richard Sherman. I think the Seattle and Jacksonville teams would love him.

Troy Hill Oregon Small but quick. Perfect slot corner and mid round guy.  Needs strength and experience but could develop.

Kevin Johnson Wake Forest Good size and speed. Could start early next season outside. Needs strength but has explosive burst. 1st round

Byron Jones UCONN Freak athlete with a world record broad jump. Has speed and toughness. Could be taken in the top 20.

Craig Mager Texas State Size speed guy. I see him late in the 2nd and develop into a starter year 2.

Bobby McCain Memphis Like this guy. Solid. Could be a good slot corner Round 3

Dexter McDonald Kansas Huge corner who could move to safety. Stud athlete but does not have quick feet.

Steve Nelson Oregon State Small tough slot corner. He is a better player than Dwight Bentley who was taken in the 3rd round.

Marcus Peters Washington Talented pure cover guy. Has the skill set to start outside next season. However, his effort is all over the place. I watched Colorado game, his effort was awful. He would not pursue or tackle He gave up on a lot of plays. Boom or bust.

Demarious Randall Arizona State Enough size and speed to play outside. Could develop and start in the a couple years 3rd round.

Darryl Roberts Marshall Great athlete but slight. Show quickness but need strength. 4th round.

Eric Rowe Utah Tweener has at played safety and corner. Good athlete, physical. Poor ball skills at corner. I like him better at safety. I could see him go in the top 40.

Josh Shaw USC outside guy with size and speed. Suspended this season at USC. I would not take him.

Djour Smith FAU Slot guy who looks like a solid prospect. He is solid and could play early at slot corner. 4th round

Tre Waynes MSU Stud. Can play outside on an island and tackle. Good ball skills. Immediate starter top 15 pick.

PJ Williams FSU Good player. Can play outside or inside. Can tackle and play the ball. I had him as a 1st round pick but he just got nailed for DUI. Off my board.

Detroit Lions Draft Preview Offensive Line 2015

Lions are looking for a Left Tackle to move Reiff inside or a left guard to replace Sims. This draft has good right tackle/guard prospects but limited left tackles.

AJ Cann South Carolina OG This guy is a starting guard in the NFL. He is a better on the run block than pass pro. I think late 2nd round is about for him.

TJ Clemmings Pitt OT I think this guy is a right tackle only. He got thrown around in the senior bowl. I would not draft him.

Lael Collins OG LSU This guy is as solid as you get. I think he would be a really good guard. Right tackle he would be fine. I do not think he has the feet to play left. I could see him going in the top 25.

Jamil Douglas OG Arizona Good player not a plug in starter. Could use a year on the bench but could develop into a solid starter. 4th round.

Cameron Erving Florida State OG Multiple position player. Started at LT and Center. I think he would be a starting guard for Lions next season. He does not offer value at #23 but you would get a solid player.

Jake Fisher Oregon OT Fast riser who has the ability to play Left tackle. He is not a slam dunk but has the athletic ability to pass block at the NFL level. He could land in the the top 25 and could be on the Lions.

Erick Flowers Miami OT Strong guy who is a plug in starter at right tackle. A masher in the run game but lacks the lateral ability to be a top flight left tackle. Top 40 pick.

Tre Jackson Florida State OG Sinking prospect. Does not move his feet like you want. Is tough and will run block. I see him as a third round pick.

Ali Marpet Hobart OG D 3 guy. Moves well. I think He is a 2nd round pick and a starter at guard.

John Miller Louisville OG Louisville Solid player. Will start in the NFL for awhile. I think he is a third round pick.

Mitch Morse Missouri OG A solid guard prospect. I think he will be a player in his 2nd year. I do not think he can play tackle.

Cedric Ogbuehi Texas A&M OT In injured ACL decreased his value. I do not think he is a left tackle. His future is at right tackle. Top 50 pick.

Andrus Peat Stanford OT Left tackle. Does not look the part but can moe his feet. Masher in the run game. Top 15 pick.

Ty Sambarilo Colorado State Right Tackle only but could be pretty good. A top 100 player who could start next season.

Donovan Smith Penn State OT Intriguing prospect. Film is not great but played great at senior bowl. Has the feet for the left tackle. A gamble.

Laken Tomlinson Duke OG Good guard prospect who start in the NFL next season. Big and nasty has value in the mid 2nd round.

Daryl Williams OT Oklahoma Right Tackle masher. Can he pass block? 4th round.

Detroit Lions draft preview Defensive Line 2015

Deep class of lineman this year. Good thing, Lions need to replace Suh, Nick, CJ, George Johnson and possibly Flu.

Here are my thoughts and grades on some of the top lineman:

Arik Armstead Oregon DT- Strong, holds the line. Lacks explosive moves. 3-4 teams will love him. Not a scheme fit for Detroit. 6.5 possible rookie starter

Vic Beasley Clemson DE- Flamethrower, Game changer, My # 1 player in draft. Should be top 5 pick 7.5 impact player

Michael Bennett Ohio State DT, Quick, 1 gap DT. Good motor can rush the passer. Poor against the run. Gets washed. 6.4 rotational guy, possible starter Lions target 2nd round.

Angelo Blackburn Auburn DT Big guy but lacks strength. Has potential Late round pick 5.8 has a chance.

Malcolm Brown Texas DT Strong, good movement. I think this guy should be the Lions pick at #23. 6.5 Starter in rookie season

Xavier Cooper Washington State DT Quick, Great movement, ate up Oregon Lions Target in round # 2. 6.5 Starter in rookie season.

Chris Covington Rice DT Fits the Lions scheme. Up field 3 technique. Possible 3 rd round

Carl Davis Iowa DT Tough evaluation. 2 gapper at Iowa but played well at the senior bowl. Possible 2nd round target 6.4 Rotational Guy

Mario Edwards Florida State DE Solid Strong side end. Not a pass rusher could help on early downs 6.2 rotational guy

Eddie Goldman Florida State DT Plugger, not a pass rusher. Gets stuck on blocks. Not a 1st rounder 6.4 rotational guy

Randy Gregory Nebraska DE Total boom and bust guy. I took him off my board. Looks the part 6.6

Marcus Hardison ASU DT This guy is growing on me. I think he was game. Can get up field and rush the passer. 3rd round 6.3

Eli Harold Virginia DE Not in love with his game. Lacks moves and upper body in the pass rush. Strong at the point of attack. 3-4 guy

Danielle Hunter LSU DE overrated. Blew up the combine but nothing on film. Has potential. 6 possible starter with potential

Grady Jarrett Clemson DT Late riser. Good quickness, plays hard, Possible Lions target in 2nd round.
6.3 rotational

Owa Odighizuwa UCLA DE Love this guys game. Can bend and play the run. Has injury history I like him in the 2nd round


Nate Orchard Utah DE Good player, tore up Andrus Peat. Not a physical specimen but can play. 6.3 rotational guy 2nd round.

Jordan Phillips Oklahoma DT- Not a scheme fit for Detroit, True NT in 3-4. has injury history 6.3 rotational rookie

Shane Ray Missouri DE- Not a scheme fit. Not long enough to play DE. Probably a 3-4 OLB.

Bobby Richardson Indiana DT I like this guy. Good quickness, long arms Could see him the 3rd round 6.3 rotational guy

Danny Shelton Washington DT Feast Mode. Good 3-4 NT. Huge but can move. top 10 pick

Preston Smith Mississippi State DE Jason Jones clone, good pass rusher can play DT and DE. 2nd round 6.5 starter late in rookie year.

ZaDarius Smith Kentucky DE Good value in the middle rounds played well in the All-start games. Can surprise.

Gabe Wright Auburn DT Did not really like this guy. Got blocked and stayed blocked. Has quickness maybe in the middle rounds
