Lions draft priorities

1. Defensive Back

With every defensive back on the roster except John Wendling on the last year of their contracts, (Speivey and Berry would be RFA) this is a great need. With only Delmas and maybe Houston as a keeper depth is needed at corner and safety. Martin Mayhew drafts timed speed at corner. Look at corners with 4.4 or under speed. Note: only one starting CB in the NFL was not timed under 4.6 (Brandon Browning Seattle).
Chris Houston 4.32, Eric Wright 4.36, Alphonos Smith 4.47, Don Carey 4.49 at the combine. Aaron Berry 4.39 at his pro day.

2. Offensive Tackle

The Lions re-signed Jeff Backus to a 2 year contract to buy some time. Gosder Cherlius is in the last year of his contract. Jason Fox and Corey Hilliard are the back ups neither seem to be a long term answer. THe Lions will have to strike at 23 if they want to get a starter. I rate only three guys as starters (Kalil, Adams and Reiff) Others need development time.

I rate Mike Adams as the 2nd best tackle

3. Interior Offensive Line

Dom Raoila is entering his 12th NFL season and Stephen Peterman ready top be replaced this area is a priority. I rate 6 centers in this draft as a starters, some should be around in the 3rd round. I rate at least 7 guards as starters. A strong year for each position. The Lions could use mid round picks to build depth.

 4. Defensive End

With KVB entering his 12th NFL Season, Cliff Avril under a contract cloud, Lo Jack is in his last year under contract. The Lions need some solutions in the long term. Signing Everette Brown may help and Ugo Chinasa is a prospect off the practice squad. There are a lot interesting prospects at end. Many are undersized speed rushers that the Lions love.

5. Running Back

With the concussion issue of Jahvid Best and the injury/pot problems of Mikel LeShoure the Lions need depth at RB. There are a lot of backs that can fill roles in this draft. The Lions seem to be trying to find a slot/3rd down back to fill in for Best.

6. Wide Receiver

The need for a slot guy to replace Nate Burleson and help with the return game is draft possiblity.
The Lions have worked out Devon Wyllie and TY Hilton. MSU WR Keyshawn Martin has also been linked to this spot.

Arkansas WR Joe Adams is one of my favorite players

7. Linebacker

Resigning Stephen Tulloch moved this position down a couple slots. Justin Durant and Deandre Levy are in their last year under contract. Doug Hogue and Ashlee Palmer also return. A run and hit will backer would be a good add in the mid rounds.

8. Quarterback

With the loss of Drew Stanton to the Colts and the age of Shaun Hill a third development guy is needed. The rule of thumb is to draft a QB when you do not need it.

SDSU Ryan Lindley is a possiblity

Lions Visits OT Dennis Kelly and OG J.C. Oram

Pre draft visit continue with two unheraled lineman.

OT Dennis Kelly from Purdue. Measuring in at over 6'8" and weighind 322 he ran 5.33 in the 40. His arms measrued at 33 1/2 which is okay. He did an impressive 30 reps at 225. The rest of his scores include 27" vj 8'"8 braod and 4.91 in the 20 and 7.73 l drill. I rate hims as a free agent.

Kelly was a three starter at Purdue

JC Oram a 6'3" 306 lb guard from Weber State. He ran a nice 5.09 40 did 27 reps @ 225. His jumps were 30" Vj 808 broad. 4.63 on the 20 and 7.94 l-drill. His arms measured at 32 1/2. I rate him as a free agent.

Arizona Wr David Douglas visisted the Lions on Wednesday. He is 6 foot 206lbs ran 4.45 40 repped 20 at 225 on the bench. Jumps were 365. Vj and 9'10" Broad. His agilty scores were impressive at 4.07 20 and 6.79 L-drill. I rate him as a late 7th or PFA.

Douglas caught 151 passes and 11 td in his career.

OT from Harvard Kevin Murphy also visited. He is 6'7" 305 lbs. He ran 5.25 40 19 reps at 225 Jumps include 27.5 vj and 9' broad. 4.76 20 7.71 L-Drill are average. He would be a free agent and a practice squad type of guy. He started two years at Harvard and was a 2nd team All-American.

Lions bring in Keith Tandy for a visit

West Virginia CB Keith Tandy has visited Allen Park in one of the Lions 30 predraft visits.

Tandy is 5'10" 202 he ran 4.51 in the 40 repped 225 16 times had solid 35" Vj and 1000 Broad jumps.
His 4.29 20 yard shuttle is okay and his 6.91 L drill is pretty good.

He had 4 picks 9 PBU plus 50 tackles in 13 games this season.

I rate Tandy as a 5th round pick, I do not think he will be an NFL starter but could contribute as a back up.

Pats sign OLB Bobby Carpenter

Patriots signed Lions free agent OLB Bobby Carpenter.

Carpenter played 26 games for the Lions starting 5. He made 59 tackles and defended 3 passes. His interception vs. the Cowboys will easily be his best remembered play.

He played well during the 4 games winning streak at the end of 2010. He showed he cover and play in space. He did struggle when Justin Durant was sidelined with a concussion in 2011. Carpenter could not hold up at the point attack and the Falcons and 49ers ran straight at him.
