Detroit Lions advanced Stats season total Offensive Line

The offensive line had the following rankings by Football Outsiders

Run Blocking    # 15

Pass Protection # 1

Breakdown:

Jeff Backus Pro Football Focus Rank: #49 Rank by Football Outsiders run to LE # 30

Backus struggled mightly in the run game. I credited him with only 7 good blocks. He more than held his own in pass pro. He gave up 3 sacks and 25 hits.  PFF creditied him with only 1 sack given up, 2nd in the NFL to Sean Locklear.

Next Season:
He is under contract with a possible $5 million cap hit if we keep him. Hopefully, he will retire.

Rob Sims PFF rank: #11 Left Rank Run rank #21

Started off having a pro bowl season but struggled down the stretch. He missed 29 blocks and gave up 14 QBHits total. He threw 36 good blocks, many on pulls or traps.

Next Season:
Still a building block for the offense. Would benefit from a better left tackle to improve his run numbers.

Dom Raiola #13 center Middle Run # 7

Played well early sans the total meltdown at Tennessee. He really struggled down the stretch. Gave up 13 QB hits and missed 31 blocks.

Next Season:
He is under contract with a $4 million cap hit. I think we should cut him.

Gos Cherilus PFF rank #8 Run  Right # 25

Had his best season. Stayed healthy, only missed 1 snap because of a shoe issue. Gave 20 QBH hits and committed 9 penalities.

Next season:
A free agent who could see action on the open market. I think the Lions will move on without him.

Stephen Peterman PFF rank # 40

A tale of two seasons. Run blocking was really good. 42 good blocks and a # 6 rank up the middle. Struggled in pass protection. Gave 28 QBHits and he and Dom struggled with twists and stunts.

Next Season
Under contract $2.65 million cap hit. 2013 should be his last as a Lion starter.

Riley Reiff #34 tackle

Spent much of the year as the #71 is eligible guy. Is penciled in to start at Left Tackle next season.

Next season:
Starting Left Tackle. $1.8 mil cap hit

Jason Fox

Next Season:
Restricted Free Agent, starting right tackle in 2013.

Dylan Gandy

Next Season:
Free Agent, re-sign him and let him fight for the center job.

Corey Hilliard

Next Season:
Free Agent, Will get some action in the open market. Played well in his previous chances in 2010 and 2011.

Rodney Austin

Next Season:
Future contract, could contend for the center job.

Bill Nagy
Picked up from waivers off the Cowboys. Missed season with an ankle.

Next Season:
Under contract $600,000 cap hit, Starting Center

Detroit Lions Martin Mayhew Draft Review 2009-2010

2010

Suh Round # 1 Pick # 2 45 starts 136 tackles 21 sacks 1 int

Great pick. Played at an elite level most of his time in Detroit. All-Pro in 2010, should be again 2012.

Grade : A+

Jahvid Best Round # 1 Pick  #30 22 games 15 starts 255/945/6 rush 85/774 3 rec

Tough pick, traded up to select him (Lions got Best and Jason Fox, Vikings got Chris Cook, Everson Griffen and Mickey Shuler) even though he had a history of concussions. He has had two since playing for Detroit, ending his career. Leaves a huge hole for Mayhew.

Grade: D

Amari Spievey  Round # 3 Pick # 66 30 games 24 starts 122 tackles 5 int 3 sacks

A terrible pick for a corner. Caused a rift between the coaches and scouts. Moved to safety and failed to make a positive impact. Has suffered his 4th concussion. He is done in Detroit.

Grade: D

Jason Fox Round #4 Pick # 128 Games 5

A work in progress. Still a young player who could develop into an NFL starter. Must stay healthy.

Grade: C

Willie Young Round # 7 Pick # 213 31 games 23 tackles 3 sacks

Looked like a great pick last season, bombed this season. Unlikely to tendered as an RFA.

Grade: C+

Tim Toone Round # 7 Pick #255

Never panned out for us. Did not show quickness to play in the slot or return kicks. He is on the Atlanta Falcons roster, I talked to him before the game. He has cut his hair.

Grade: D

2009

Top 3 picks in 2009

Matthew Stafford Pick # 1 1090/1821/53 12542 77td 78/314/7 rush

17-27 record as a starter. 6 years $72 million contract. Joe Harrington was 18-37 as a starter in Detroit. Ranked as the #15 QB by the ESPN QBR.

Grade: C+

Brandon Pettigrew Round # 1 Pick # 20 56 games 241 rec 2403 14 td

A terrible disappointment this year. At his best, a target in the middle of the field and the red zone. Has not shown the pro bowl ability I thought he had

Grade: C-

Louis Delmas  Round # 2 Pick: #33 48 starts 262 tackles 3 int 4 FR 3 sacks

A puzzling player. Always hurt, makes flashy plays but rarely turns the ball over. He is a huge free agent decision this offseason for Mayhew

Grade: C

DeAndre Levy Round # 3 pick # 76 56 g 49 starts 300 t 5 int 5 FR

Looked like a great pick for two years. We moved him outside and he has been the worst OLB in the NFL. Too slow to cover or run down anyone. Probably an inside LB in the 3-4.

Grade: D+

Derrick Williams Round # 3 Pick # 82 11 games 9-82 rec 42/931 KOR

Bust, two picks later was Mike Wallce for the Steelers. Slow and could not catch.

Sammie Hill 4th round Pick # 115 59 games 18 starts 95 tackles 4 sacks 4 FR

Really good pick. Solid rotational tackle. A free agent this year, should be re-signed.

Grade: B+

Aaron Brown 6th round Pick #192 22 games 2 starts 45-189-0 rush 18-137-1 rec 42/951 KoR

Quick guy who showed flashes but never put it together. Preseason superstar.

Grade: C

Lydon Murtha Round # 7 Pick # 228 Practice Squad

Injury prone, combine freak, never played for the Lions. He played 9 games for the Dolphins.

Grade: D

Zack Follett Round # 7 Pick # 235 17 games 2 starts 31 tackles 12 FR

Good special teams player who was a terrible linebacker. Could have had a nice career covering kicks but a neck injury ended his career

Grade: C+

Dan Gronkowski round # 7 pick #254 2 games 1 rec 4 yards

Traded for Alphonso Smith in 2010. Part of the summer of Gronk in 2012.

Grade : C
